From Compression Fracture to Independent Living

Ms. Root came to Thrive for therapy services following hospitalization for L3 compression fracture status post kyphoplasty.

Prior to admission, Ms. Root lived alone in a single-story home for mobility and was independent with all activities of daily living. At the time of check-in, Ms. Root exhibited deficits in strength, stability, coordination, and endurance requiring supplemental oxygen with activity. During her initial evaluation, she required moderate assistance with transfers and was only able to walk 10ft. With a two-wheeled walker requiring frequent rest breaks due to decreased endurance.

Rehabilitation After an L3 Compression Fracture

An L3 compression fracture can significantly affect spinal stability, mobility, and overall endurance, especially in older adults. Following a procedure such as kyphoplasty, patients often require structured rehabilitation to safely restore movement and rebuild strength. Common challenges during recovery include reduced balance, limited walking tolerance, and difficulty performing everyday tasks. Skilled therapy helps guide patients through a safe and progressive recovery process.

The Role of Skilled Therapy After Kyphoplasty

Therapy typically focuses on improving posture, core strength, gait stability, and activity tolerance. In addition, therapists monitor energy levels and breathing response, especially in patients who initially require supplemental oxygen during activity. The goal is to gradually increase independence while ensuring safety at each stage of recovery.

“I am where I am today because of my therapists at Thrive. They go beyond what they are supposed to and are very caring. Therapy is very structured, explains well the treatment plan and show so much compassion.”

-Ms. Root

Improved Endurance and Mobility Through Structured Therapy

At discharge, Ms. Root was independent with transfers, able to walk over 500 feet with 2-wheeled walker on different surfaces, and ascend stairs safely, showing improved confidence and stability, without needing supplemental oxygen, and successfully achieving her rehab goals to return home independently and take care of her indoor and outdoor cats.
